Udayar Part 1 to 6 - Balakumaran

Author : Balakumaran

Udaiyar (History Of Cholas - Part 1 to 6) is a Tamil novel authored by Balakumaran, and its story is spread over six volumes. The first part of the story was published in a weekly Tamil magazine, and subsequently five additional volumes of the book were published.

The storyline is a sequel to Ponniyin Selvan, a 20th-century Tamil historical novel written by Kalki Krishnamurthy, which narrates the story of one of the kings of the Chola Dynasty during the 10th and 11th centuries. Udaiyar picks up where the previous novel left off, depicting Rajaraja Chola's rule and the construction of the big temple at Tanjore. Rajaraja Chola has long dreamed of constructing Anbe Sivam, a mammoth of a temple, borne of the immense love he harbors for his people and nation.

Through the construction of the temple, Rajaraja Chola aspired to raise his country and dynasty's image by improving its economy and restoring its pride and glory. He envisioned using the prisoners of war for this useful building work, as opposed to letting them sit idle in the prisons. He also sought to rid the country of unemployment by focusing the people on this singular goal. Chola succeeded in his vision, and the resulting outcome of this project was a thriving economy and development of the capital which led to the country's prosperity.
